Chapter 14
I pressed my feet eagerly to the floor beneath me as the plane gently touched down. Armed with experience and a new sense of belonging in southern Germany, I walked confidently past the smiling flight attendants and disembarked, effortlessly making my way through customs and to the train to start the ride to Ankerich. The morning was fresh and pleasant, the sky cloudless and bright, and the slightly cool air held the promise of a warm afternoon in its breeze.
Boarding the newly painted red train bound for Ankerich, I smiled at the conductor, who reciprocated with a minuscule head nod, his tightly-sealed lips hidden by a flimsy mustache. I grabbed a seat and daydreamed about my trip back home. Though not exactly how I expected it to be, it had served as a refresher of sorts. A chance to charge my batteries. Not necessarily a break, or a further example of the futility of holding on to hopes of a future with Deirdre, but more of a perspective gauge. It was the first day of April. Springtime in Germany. I had almost three more months to spend in Ankerich. Though this semester would be notably shorter than the previous semester, I was more excited and less nervous. There would be no time wasted trying to make friends.
The only thing that would be lacking was the lunches with Julia.
I sighed and focused my attention forward and on the fun times I would be having with Stinki. If last semester my approach had been to try anything, not say no, be open, have fun, this semester was going to be that magnified. I fished my iPod from my bag and scrolled down to Leatherface, âSpringtime.â Smiling, I leaned my head back against the ugly blue patterned headrest as Frankieâs wine-weathered rasp narrated the upcoming semester:
âAnd everything is new
And everything is clean
And everything is free
And there were still so many things to see...â
The train hummed along the rails and sleepy towns and bucolic villages zipped by. Music filled my ears and each time I opened my eyes I was greeted with a more pleasant sight than before. The landscape had shaken off its October outfit of dark greens and rusty browns and replaced it with lighter shades of green, brighter and more lively, speckled with brilliant buds of blazing blues and dazzling yellows, hugging the earth like a comfortable sweater. The fields had been harvested and the new seeds sowed, the earth lined with rows of bumpy brown mounds, the soil bulging in anticipation of the first sprouts of spring.
As the train neared Ankerich, its pace slowed, displaying through the windows a flipbook depicting domesticity. With a hiss of brakes, the train came to a stop and I alighted, stepping into the beautiful late morning sun. Because the weather was so pleasant and I was wide awake despite the overnight flight, I decided to spend
